Our Philosophy

Vision and Core Values

At SunGarden, we consciously strive to aid the development of the whole child at all times. We strive to see each child with fresh eyes every day, embracing each child's unique qualities. All of the environments at SunGarden are thoughtfully prepared to support each child’s social, emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual life.

A deep understanding of Montessori principles and practices, combined with recognition of children’s innate inquisitiveness; guides at SunGarden introduce the “magic” of the Montessori materials to each child.

The clarity and wisdom within the materials comes alive for children through repeated manipulation. The repetition then leads to a deep understanding and appreciation of key intellectual and developmental concepts. This joyful approach to all materials in the prepared environment invites children to fully participate in every aspect of their work, resulting in deep satisfaction and fulfillment.

Living in a mixed-age community, guided by Grace and Courtesy lessons, regularly practiced conflict resolution, and the modeling and encouragement of respectful adults, allows children daily opportunities to practice positive social interactions.

Recognizing that the refinement of large and small motor skills is a driving force within young children and that movement of the hand directly influences brain development; we provide many creative opportunities for active engagement.  Children are welcomed to choose activities indoors and outdoors throughout the day.

Commitment to Quality

SunGarden Montessori Children’s House is a non-profit AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) recognized school for children 3 – 6 years of age. AMI- certified teachers and assistants create a nurturing, respectful atmosphere in which children learn and grow at their own pace, enjoying a wide variety of thoughtfully-chosen activities.  The natural outdoor environments have been purposefully designed for children’s exploration, discovery, play, gardening and nature activities; and are available throughout the day, every day.

Outcomes of Montessori

Each child who completes the full 3 year cycle at SunGarden will be assured of a well-rounded Montessori experience, being introduced to the full range of materials in all areas – practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics, art, music, science and geography. Daily experiences with music allow children to refine their own balance, rhythm, and large motor control.

With thoughtfully prepared outdoor environments, children enjoy gardening, art, science, and  practical life activities in our outdoor classroom extensions as well as our Natural Outdoor Environment that includes garden beds, a worm and compost bin, a large deck, an in-hill slide and a musical fence.

Food and Nutrition

At SunGarden, helping children develop healthy eating habits and awareness early on is very important to us. Children are offered nutritious, whole foods and are not given anything with added sugar, or processed foods. Snacks are contributed by parents who take turns by week. Snack each day consists of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and protein such as cheese or hummus. SunGarden has an organic garden which is used to supplement snacks as well as for cooking/baking when there is something ready to harvest. We are able to accommodate food allergies and sensitivities. For children who stay in the extended day programs, the families send in lunch daily. Our nutrition priorities and requirements applies also to lunches sent from home.

This is education, understood as a help to life; an education from birth, which feeds a peaceful revolution and unites in a common aim, attracting them as a single center.
